The Monster and the Maiden: chapter 04, part I
Quote from Emily Shadowtalon's First Diary

"Your house is so cool, Mr. Strange. Too bad there aren't ghosts in it though," said Emily as she led Edmond down the darkened sidewalk from the bus stop where they had been dropped off.

He gritted his teeth and stifled an annoyed sigh. He had given up trying to correct her pronunciation of his surname—le Strange—an hour ago. She was no longer even trying to call him "monsieur", which she had butchered into "mon-sewer". Edmond was beginning to think she was doing it on purpose.

"Maybe they just didn't feel like performing tonight. You can't make ghosts appear on command, you know. Maybe I could come by another time and see if they're there then?" she said as she slowed down so she was walking beside him.

"I do not think so."

"Why not?" she said, the beginnings of a whine in her voice.

"I am sure that your parents would not like you to come to the house of a strange man, Emily."

"I thought 'strange' was your last name," she said and started to giggle.

"Emily, I am being serious." He fought to keep a disapproving scowl on his face so the resigned chuckle that was tickling his throat would not betray itself. She did not need any more encouragement.

Glancing at her from the corner of his eyes, he saw the pout that was fattening on her lower lip. No doubt she knew he was right.

No, his invitation had been a one-time occurrence and one that could have ended rather badly for her if had not regained control of himself when he did.

After inviting her into his house, the first thing he had done was excuse himself saying that he had to use the bathroom. Leaving her poking around his parlor, he disappeared into the basement where he gulped down the potion that would help stave off the gnawing hunger that had been plaguing him since her arrival. He also pulled out a file and ground down his fangs all the while berating himself that he had even considered using Emily as a pawn against Koryll, grandfather of the girl and his former master who had changed Edmond into the blood-craving creature that he was now.

It was much easier to think clearly now that the potion had done its work and his hunger for blood was no longer clamoring to be eased. And he realized he was terrified by what he had almost done. He had never had a clearer example of why he could not allow himself to lose control.

"Here it is," said Emily as they neared a brightly lit house on their left after they had walked a few blocks in silence.

I was wondering if it was Tahlvin… cool… but… hey, wait a minute, are the stories connected? 'Cause if they are, that's quite the soap opera! They make beautiful babies, though.

Edmond certainly looks the part of a vampire in the dark. It's softened and made a bit comical by Emily, but I'm sure he's not one to laugh at. I love how she's dragging him home like a lost puppy. I half-expect her to say, "can we keep him?" Even though I know that won't happen. There will be hell to pay once Tahlvin has his say, I'm certain.

I love the extra picture! You can almost feel poor Emily's sudden apprehension. You're in troouubllee now, girly.

  2. Beth says:

haha I knew it! Emily kept reminding me of the pictures of Brandee you put up when she was a little girl.

Anyways, I'm growing to love this story. At first I was a little anxious for the next chapter in Worlds Apart but now I'm addicted to this one.

I'm not one to consider sim guys to be 'hot' since they are just pixals, but you do make quite interesting and realistic looking sims, far better than any i could create. Also, your stories are one great way to avoid studying for midterms in college (i'm such a slacker)
ok, done gushing… thanks for the update

Oh, so that explains a lot. Emily is Tahlvin's little girl, huh? Awesome – his genes are fantastic! And yes, I think Emily really does resemble Brandee as a child. Lucky kid, she's going to grow up gorgeous!

Wow, Nathan and Tory grew up looking so HOT! I remember thinking Nathan was a little cutie, and though Tory looks great too, I think Nathan still holds the "favourite twin" status in my sad old heart. :D I love twins (maybe because I am one), and I really like how the boys have similar features but aren't identical.
Does this mean Brandee broke up with Jason in your game? And Tahlvin with Sam? Or did something else happen? Gosh, I'm nosey!

I really love the lighting in these pictures! The first few at the bus stop with that creepy guy leering over at them were great. And the detail of your sets are another really lovely feature.

  4. Kara says:

Mao: Yeah, the Christmas story and this one are connected. Ah, the drama! :) And, you're right, it does seem like he's trailing her home like a lost puppy. haha! When taking the pictures, I loved how Edmond kept glancing down at Emily and how some of her animations made it look like she was leaning toward him. It's like they know they're connected somehow. ;)

Beth: Thank you! I'm glad I could help you procrastinate. It's something I'm very good at myself! ;) I've always been one to find animated, pixelized (oh, I invented a new word!) or drawn characters to be attractive. I'm not sure why that is. I have a few friends who think I'm odd for that though.

amalinaball: It's funny: Emily looks a lot like Brandee now but she definitely grows up to look more like her father when she's an adult. Of course, she's a daddy's girl (he dotes on her all the time in the game…it's so cute) so it's only right, I suppose.

I didn't know you're a twin. How cool! I haven't decided if the twins will be making another appearance in the story, but in the game they look very sexy as adults. Maybe I can have them do a little walk-on role or something.

Yeah, there was quite a bit of drama in the game when Brandee and Jason broke up. When she had Tahlvin's baby there was no hiding who the father was (since the baby had the same skin as Tahlvin). Jason wasn't without fault though as he'd been having an affair on the side (though Brandee didn't know about it). Tahlvin ended up leaving Sam to be with Brandee. And Jason moved out to live with Sam, although they aren't married.

Jason and Sam came over the Brandee and Tahlvin's house the other day though for the twins' birthday and I had to fight to keep Jason from flirting with his ex-wife. *rollseyes* I actually didn't catch him one time and his indiscretion caused Sam and Tahlvin to rush across the lot to slap the two cheaters. Luckily I had saved before that so I just reloaded the game. Stupid sims! haha!

  5. Adele says:

Aaah! The image for the chapter title is just gorgeous! Along with every other one, of course. I love your attention to detail– *sigh* — no words, no words. :D

  6. E. Black says:

Great update, Kara. Your eye for detail is excellent. :)

(and don't you love those scarves that were released on SAU…one of my boys wears the red and black one also. ^_^ )

  7. Jade says:

Kara, I don't know how you do it…how you make everything seem so real. I am always striving for your level of creativity and still fall flat on my face! LOL! :-)

  8. cadie says:

this is where i laugh 'coz I WAS RIGHT! I knew emily was brandee and TAHLVIN (aagh gotta love that elf :D ) 's daughter coz she has brunette hair, like brandee ( and sam had blonde hair), and she had a few features from tahlvin, like the skin, so yay me for being right. God how sad am i??

Anyways WOW brandee's kiddies have really grown into sexy teenagers (jason did good) and I love the whole middle-aged mom look brandee hs going, she look really pretty, especially in the second last pic, her pose is like so realistic. Edmond and Tahlvin, pixelized sex on a screen!
I love the simple yet effective detail you put into this entire chapter.
This is my favourite chapter so far CADIE WANT MOOORE, please :)

  9. Jenny says:

omg! awesome Kara…wow…I'm a bit slow I guess, I didn't suspect that they were her parents…Brandee and Tahlvin look amazing by the way!

  10. Kara says:

Adele: I was initially going to do some sort of "artsy" pic for the header/chapter image, but I loved how that one turned out so thought "what the heck!" I'm glad I went with it.

    E. Black: That scarf is fun. I'm glad I found it as it fits Tory's personality perfectly.

Jade: Thank you (although I have to disagree with you falling flat our your face)! Well, all I can say is I photoshop my pictures a lot. You should see what this series looked like straight from the game. They were all pretty dark even with the dozens of lights that I had set out around the set.

cadie: I'm really glad you enjoyed the chapter so much! Jason definitely has good genes. :) And Brandee's realistic pose is all thanks to Decorgal's new model pose hack. I love it!

Jenny: Thank you! I've enjoyed the excuse to get to play around with Tahvlin and Brandee again. I miss them!

  11. mesha says:

damn that was good. i can just feel the antispation of what tal is gonna say lmao its gonna be good

  12. Gayl says:

Wonderful update. The camera angles really add to the sense of location and emotion in the scenes. And the lighting was extremely effective.

I definitely related these characters to your Christmas series but I am scratching my head as to what happened to Jason. The twins grew up nicely! Not even going to comment on Brandee, Tahlvin, and Edmond. It would just come out as babbling, they are so amazingly gorgeous.

  13. Decorgal says:

I'm loving all the new characters that we are being introduced too- even the two teenage punks. :D I already don't like the elf but we'll see where you take us with his character. I really liked Emily's diary entry- it was so cute down to the handwriting and I must say I'm adoring her more with each chapter.

I'm looking forward to the next one, as always.

  14. goodbye_sun says:

I do so look forward to these. Edmond is so failing at being in charge; Emily does manage to get her way (well, at least with him). I was wondering if this might end up tying into other stories in your universe.

  15. Lisa says:

I really love the interaction between Emily & Edmond. He wants so badly to distance himself from everyone around him, but Emily is not going to let him push her aside!

  16. Kara says:

    mesha: heehee ;) I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Gayl: Thank you! As to Jason, he's currently shacking up with Tahlvin's ex-wife. :P I haven't decided if I'm ever going to tell the complete tale as to what happened between Brandee and Jason, Tahlvin and Sam. But, if you're curious, I explained a bit of it in my reply to amalinaball above.

Decorgal: Nathan and Tory are so cute! This was more of a cameo appearance for them in this chapter so that you could see what they look like now. They've actually only been teenagers for about a day in my game so I'm still kind of getting to know them again. So far, they are demanding that I redecorate their room. The space crap is no longer their style. *rollseyes*

goodbye-sun: In most cases, if Emily sees something she wants then she'll do anything to get it…unless it means going up against her father. Tahlvin's wishes/laws are not to be ignored. haha!

Lisa: Yeah, poor Edmond. He really does try to be a good little antisocial monster, but he really has a hard time with it. ;)

  17. Eva says:

If these stories are connected, what ever happened to Tahlvin and Brandee's significant others?!?

  18. Kara says:

Eva: Well, Jason and Sam are actually living together at the moment. I kind of did a quick explanation in a reply to amalinaball above.

  19. Tanya says:

Holy thunderclouds – Tahlvin! *swoons* ;) Now that that's taken care of, great chapter (or Part 1 I should say)! I'm glad I was right about Emily's parents :D And the twins have grown up gorgeous. When I re-read the Christmas story a few weeks ago I saw that you'd mentioned that something was sort of going on between Tahlvin/Brandee and Jason/Sam, which is why I thought that Tahlvin was Emily's dad (she's got her mum's teeth).

I love the way Edmond tries to be strict with Emily, but is also trying not to laugh at some of the things she says :D And it was very good of him to take her home (and not bite her of course). Finding out what happens now that Tahlvin has met him promises to be very interesting, especially as he's not very happy with Emily getting home so late …. Looking forward to Part 2! :)

P.S. Emily and Edmond look great in the extra picture – it's a lot of fun waiting to see what our sims do when something happens "off camera"

  20. jacqueline says:

I love how you have a child and a vampire getting along well. It's quite different.
    & I can't wait to read more.
& I love the last picture. Are you going to make wallpapers for
    The Monster and the Maiden?

  21. Kara says:

Jacqueline, yes, I'm sure I could do some wallpapers sometime. I'll keep an eye out for some good opportunities while taking pictures. I can't promise when I'll get around to it, but I will.

  22. Shera says:

It was aweson. Edmond as hot as usual. Emy…she looks like a real girl. Sorry my english again )

  23. anghard says:

A fantastic update. This chapter just flows so well. I feel a tad sorry for Edmond. It doesn't look too good bringing a little girl home at such an hour. Her brothers are intriguing though.

Beautiful screencaps and narrative as always. Looking forward to seeing what happens next with the elf.

    Hope everything is ok….

  24. oolongteadrinker says:

this is probably the prettiest Brandee has ever looked! Wow!
