Treats and a Trick
October 29th, 2004
(Note: I'm preempting the regularly scheduled drama that's going on over at the Alphabits' house to bring you a special Halloween episode starring the Strudel sisters!)

Kara and Kim awoke bright and early on Halloween morning. Unable to contain their excitement for trick-or-treating, they got dressed in their costumes and woke up their mom to do their makeup. After all, wearing a costume just to go trick-or-treating was a waste of a good outfit.
Once their makeup was on, their transformation was complete—Kara had become The Duchess (named after her dad's favorite western star John "Duke" Wayne) and Kim was the Sugarplum Fairy.

While their dad was cooking a special Halloween breakfast, the girls took the opportunity to play cops and robbers. It gave Kara a chance to get into her new role as protector of the Wild West.
"Surrender, Sugarplum Kid, I'm a takin' you in," Kara said in her best western drawl.
Kim snickered. "You'll have to catch me first, Duchess!"
Kara cocked her imaginary pistol. "One warnin' is all ya get, Kid. BANG! Take that! I'll make sure you never rob any banks again."
"Ha! You missed! You'll never catch me!"
"Ya wanna bet on that, varmint?"

"BANG!" said Kara, and Kim crumpled to the ground.
"Ack! Ooo! Ya got me! But I'll haunt you, Duchess! You ain't seen the last of the Sugarplum Kid!"
Kara doubled over in laughter. "Okay, let's play again."
Their dad's voice drifted up the stairwell, "Girls, breakfast!"
Kim's eyes popped open and she jumped up off the floor. "Yay! I'm starving."

The girls thumped down the stairs sounding like a pack of wild elephants. The aroma of pumpkin pancakes assailed their nostils as they entered the dining area. They plopped in their chairs and rubbed their hands in anticipation as their dad set their plates down before them.
"Thanks, Dad!" they chorused.
They were having to forego their traditional Halloween dinner of pigs-in-a-blanket, tater tots and green beans because their parents had to work, but Art was trying to make up for it with his special pumpkin pancakes.

After breakfast, Kara and Kim ran out to the curb to see their mom off on her first day at her new job. They were heading back in the house to watch Jem and the Sing-A-Longs on DVD when Kim pointed at the Cat-A-Strophic lawn ornament.
"You know, Tommy at school told me if you kiss it then it'll come alive," said Kim.
Kara snorted. "Not just any kiss." She walked up the the cat and studied it carefully. "Chandler told me that only the kiss of a kitten born on the new moon will bring it to life. And it has to happen at exactly midnight on the day of the lunar eclipse."
Kim sighed. "Oh, I guess we're too late then."
"Yeah, it would've been cool."

After spending most of the morning watching Jem, Kara and Kim decided they wanted to play with their Jem dolls. Kim had already disappeared into the playroom leaving Kara to put the DVD away. Just as she was heading upstairs, a strange old lady came down the foyer. Maybe she's a witch, thought Kara. It made perfect sense to her; it was Halloween after all.
"Hello, dear, I'm your new babysitter Calista."
Kara shook the woman's soft crepe papery hand and nodded sagely. "You have to babysit us because Mom and Dad both have to work."
"That's right."
"Okay, well…I'm going to go play with my sister. We'll be in the playroom if you need us."
Calista laughed. "All right."
