Treats and a Trick
October 29th, 2004

As promised, Calista woke the girls up with still plenty of time to spare before trick-or-treating and then went to go make them dinner. Blissfully unaware of their mother's recent calamity, Kim went to take a quick bath and Kara made the beds.

Kara and Kim scarfed down dinner, but they still had a few hours to wait until it was time to go get lots of candy. So, they decided to continue the game they'd played that morning. Except this time, Duchess was chasing the Sugarplum Kid across the western plains on horseback. They discoverd that jumping on the bed gave a good approximation of riding.
"Faster, Hot Ticket, faster!" Kara urged her imaginary horse onward. They had to catch the Kid before she reached No Name Falls.
Kim cackled. "It's hopeless, Duchess. My horse is the fastest ever!"
"Nuh uh!" said Kara. "Hot Ticket is faster than you're old horse."
"Nuh uh!"
The doorbell rang.
Kim bounced off the bed and ran downstairs. Maybe it was trick-or-treaters!

Kim frowned when she saw that it was just some strange man she'd never seen before.
"Hi," she said as she opened the door. "Who are you?"
The man's rugged face cracked open in a grin. "'ello, lass, you really shouldn't open the door for strangers."
Kim gasped then moved to shut the door. "Oh, right! I forgot. Let me go get my mom, she came home from work early." (Note: Kids sure don't miss a thing, do they?)
She almost ran into Calista who was coming down the hall to investigate. "There's a stranger here."
Calista put her hand on Kim's shoulder. "You shouldn't open the door to strangers, honey."
"I know," said Kim. "That's what he said too. So, I'm going to get mom."
"I don't think your mom wants to be disturbed right now."
After peeking out her window to see who was at the door, Andi came out of her bedroom clad only in her nightie. "It's just Willie, Calista. He's supposed to be dropping off something for Art." Then she turned to Kim. "Why don't you go let him in and entertain him until Mom gets dressed, okay?"
Kim agreed and went back to the front door. "Mom said you can come in," she informed the man.
Willie nodded and entered the foyer swiftly taking in everything around him.
"Did you know me as a baby?" He looked down to see Kim staring up with him.
"No, I'm afraid I never had that pleasure. I'm fairly new to Pirate's Cove."
"How do you know my mom?"
"Hi, Willie," said Andi as she came around the corner. She was now dressed and had a big smile on her face.
The conversation soon turned to boring adult things and Kim went to go find Kara.

"Okay, girls, it's time," said Andi a little while later. She felt a lot better after her talk with Willie and was ready to walk the girls around the neighborhood. "Go get your bags."
"I'll get them," said Kim as she took of like a shot and ran upstairs.
She threw open the armoire doors and couldn't resist twirling in excitement before snatching up the trick-or-treat bags. Finally! She'd been waiting for this moment all her life and now it was here!

Andi's eyes misted up as she clicked a picture of the girls in their Halloween costumes. They had protested ("Aw, Mom!") but Andi wanted to remember this day and how her daughters looked.
Her little girls were growing up so quickly. Sometimes she wished she could stop time. Tomorrow the girls would start at the private school they had just been accepted into (just the night before Headmaster Vince Walter had come for dinner and he was most impressed with the family and the childrens' grades). And in only a few more days, Kara would be a teenager—a young lady— already.
Andi shook her head and wiped furtively at her eyes. "Okay, girls, let's go get you some candy."
