Treats and a Trick
October 29th, 2004
Art soon emerged from his bedroom dressed in his new work uniform. He had finally gotten a job in the culinary field but this wasn't quite the job he'd had in mind. He had known he'd have to start at the bottom, but this was ridiculous. He wasn't a teenager anymore. "Oh, well," he sighed.
He gave Calista a few last minute instructions and showed her where the emergency phone numbers were located. Then he went up to the playroom to say goodbye to the girls before he left for a fun day at the drive through window. I have to remain positive about this, he thought. It shouldn't last for too long.
Around two o'clock, Calista came upstairs to find the girls still playing dolls. "Okay, you two, time for a nap."
"Awww!"
"Now, now. If you don't have a nap you won't have the energy to lug around the huge bags of candy you'll get trick-or-treating tonight."
Kim and Kara looked at each other.
"Okay," said Kim. "But don't let us sleep too long. We don't want to miss Halloween."
"Don't worry, I'll wake you up in plenty of time."
On the other side of town at Psychic Phenomena Labs, Andi wasn't having a very good day at work. She was a test subject in experiments meant to confirm the existence of ESP. But, in test after test that she participated in, Andi proved beyond a doubt that she had not one iota of extrasensory perception. The researchers didn't want any test subjects that disproved their theories; however, they were willing to give her one last chance.
They shut her in a room and told her to choose one of the two pieces of candy that sat on a table in the middle of the room. Andi looked blankly at the red and blue licorice. How was this supposed to test anything?
"Just pick one, Andi. It's not that difficult. The red or the blue?" said a voice through some speakers hung on the wall.
Andi shrugged and popped the red licorice into her mouth.
"I'm sorry," said the voice. "You chose poorly. I'm afraid we're going to have to let you go."
Andi cocked her head in confusion. "Let me go?"
"Let me rephrase that since it sounds like you need clarification: you're fired."
What? Fired? She was escorted from the labs and she barely registered the ride home. One thing kept echoing over and over in her head: she was fired! She'd given up her teaching career to try her hand at being a scientist, and now she was fired! Oh, what was she going to tell Art? How could she face the girls?
Andi arrived home early and found a confused Calista waiting for her on the stairs to the porch. Calista gave Andi a quick once over, then said, "You're home early. Is everything all right?"
"No, as a matter of fact," said Andi, and she related to the sympathetic babysitter what had happened. "I know I'm home now but would you mind staying on for awhile longer? I need some time to pull myself together and figure out what I'm going to do."
"Not a problem, dear. You go do what you need to and I'll keep the girls entertained."
With a nod of thanks, Andi shuffled off into the house and locked herself in her bedroom.

Jem and the Sing-A-Longs – I love it! I have the DVD set and am enjoying seeing all the episodes again. Pizzazz sure was good with her insults, wasn't she?
poor Andi 🙁 I hope she can find another job that she'll enjoy.

*sniff* oh, my, that was soooo adorable!!! you really know how to work the camera. the first pic of the two of them was so cute!!! (more exclamation points!!!)
awww, i'm sorry that Andi lost her job. there will be others. 🙂
i wish the girls could've gone trick or treating for real! that would've been so much fun!!! their costumes are so cute!!!

🙂 I think I love the kid stories better than the other ones so far. The Halloween costumes are too cute! 😛
