Prologue 02
June 20th, 2006
"That was smart," said Hale.
Tahlvin grunted in answer.
"Did you at least let the 'bots do their job?"
Knowing Hale would nag him until he was satisfied that Tahlvin was healing properly, Tahlvin subvocalized another command that released the 'bots from standby. Almost immediately, his hand became numb again and he felt a slight warming sensation that was altogether different from the hot pain that had throbbed through his hand. "They're working on it," he said.
Grasping Tahlvin's shoulder, Hale turned him around and, with a gentle touch, took hold of Tahlvin's injured hand.
A shimmering aura appeared around their joined hands as Hale interfaced with Tahlvin's 'bots.
Only a minute had past when Hale intoned in that flat, mechanical voice many technomages seemed to acquire when communicating directly with the 'bots, "Efficiency increased by 8%."
The glow around their hands dissipated as he released Tahlvin's hand. "You should be completely healed in a few hours," Hale said, his voice normal once more, "unless you plan on exercising your stupidity again."
"I promise to curtail myself for awhile," said Tahlvin dryly.
A small smile flickered over Hale's lips but quickly died again as a concerned visage fell over his face. "So what are you going to do?"
Tahlvin thought Hale might be asking him if he was ready to give up his preoccupation with trying to find a person to blame for Sam's death. Not wanting to voice his decision, afraid that by doing so he would be giving up on Sam, he chose to interpret the query another way as he said, "I don't know. Go home…sleep."
Hale murmured in acknowledgement then looked at Tahlvin, his eyes wide with surprise. "Wait… You mean, to your home?"
"That's the plan," said Tahlvin, understanding his brother's surprise. Since Sam's death—Goddess…had it only been a week ago?—he had avoided spending the night at their…his house. Over the past few days, he had managed to box up some of her belongings, but as soon as twilight fell he would be out of the house and on his way to his brother's place.
To be alone in his house during the day when she would have normally been at work was one thing. But to be alone in his house at night when he kept expecting to hear the creak of the bedroom floorboards as she changed out of her work clothes or the rush of water from the tub faucet as she drew her nightly bath…well, he had come to realize just how loud silence could be.

Fan service or not, that shower scene was fantastic. I enjoyed it a lot.
There is such anguish and loss here, such emotion that is tangible and evident. I find myself being constant drawn into the character's minds, their stories and their experiences. Heartbreaking and superbly written.

Stunning…heartbreaking. The photo on the bedside table which shows her pregnant is so sad.
I love the shots. Elegant, sensual, astonishing angles and clarity, and particularly adore the city shots. Fantastic!
