Prologue 02
June 20th, 2006
But, as always, his brother seemed to know what he was thinking. Rubbing at his neck and studying the ground as if he had found something of sudden interest, Hale said, "We haven't found anything yet."
"…Nothing?"
Hale shook his head as he looked up to return Tahlvin's gaze. The skin around his eyes was stretched and bruised-just like Tahlvin knew his own to be.
"Have you checked—"
"Yes. And before you ask: yes." A frustrated sigh gusted from Hale. "We've checked everything. Mother has collected on all our favors and talked to anyone that could possibly know anything. We've turned up nothing out of the ordinary."
Tahlvin looked at the ground. No, they had to have missed something. But even as he thought it, he realized how slim that chance was. The intelligence network of their organization was tapped into resource grids around the world and it was unlikely they would have overlooked anything.
"Samantha was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, brother. It's a simple as that. You have to let it go."
Goddess, he wanted so desperately to believe that his wife's death wasn't as pointless as a car crash. If only there was someone he could blame besides fate. Someone he could take vengeance on. "Our corporation isn't without its enemies. Perhaps you forgot—"
"You've got to stop this, Tahlvin," said Hale, his voice soft, almost pleading.
A bolt of anger arced through Tahlvin burning off the desolation and helplessness of before. In a cracked and brittle voice, he spat out, "She wasn't your wife!" His hands curled, nails digging painfully into his palms, and he longed to hit something.
Although Hale's eyes flickered down to take in Tahlvin's fists, he made no verbal acknowledgement of his brother's sudden anger. Instead, his voice calm, he said, "No. But you're my brother and I'm worried about you."
Turning away from Hale with a jerk, Tahlvin stalked over to the nearest tree and punched it—perhaps not as hard as he could but hard enough. His knuckles exploded in pain. He felt an instant numbing as the nanobots in his system administered a localized anesthetic to his hand. But with a subvocalized command, he overrode their programming and forced them into standby mode.
This was the type of pain he knew how to deal with.
For a long moment he stood by the tree, feeling only the throbbing of his hand and ridding his mind of any other thought. Too soon he heard his brother come up behind him.

Fan service or not, that shower scene was fantastic. I enjoyed it a lot.
There is such anguish and loss here, such emotion that is tangible and evident. I find myself being constant drawn into the character's minds, their stories and their experiences. Heartbreaking and superbly written.

Stunning…heartbreaking. The photo on the bedside table which shows her pregnant is so sad.
I love the shots. Elegant, sensual, astonishing angles and clarity, and particularly adore the city shots. Fantastic!
