Kim's Big Day, Part II
October 14th, 2004

The afternoon rolled around, Kara returned from school and the guests were still hanging around. Kim woke up from another nap to find her mom and Dina in her room. Dina was always a bit nervous around children but ever since she met Kim, when the Strudels first moved to town, Dina was fascinated with the little girl. Wanting to become friends with Kim, but not quite sure how, Dina brought Kim her teddy bear in an attempt to break the ice.

Kim played with Squeaky while her mom Andi went to the bathroom and Dina, not secure enough to entertain Kim by herself, disappeared back downstairs.

Art's little pep talk in the morning must have helped Kara have confidence at school because she returned home with a B+ on her first day! The teacher gave her some extra credit homework that would help raise her grades even more. Kara wasn't too sure about how to do some of the word problems, so Art gave her some pointers. Because of her dad's help, she was finished with her homework in no time. And then, it was time…

…to play! Curtis was her favorite teddy bear. He was named after her favorite Grampy who had died a couple of years ago. She had fun playing with Curtis, but she really couldn't wait until Kim was old enough to play dolls.

All the hard-thinking and hard-playing had made Kara hungry. She ran downstairs to see if she could find a snack, but Dad was getting dinner ready. Mmmm! Macaroni and cheese! Her favorite! "Is it almost ready, Dad?"
Kara sat impatiently at the table until Art served dinner.

It was dinner time for Kim too. Andi gave her some baby food before she went to eat some mac 'n cheese.
Dina finally screwed up her courage and, after receiving a nod from Andi, she decided it was time to try holding a baby.

Oh! This was fun! Why hadn't she tried holding Kim before this? For the first time, Dina allowed herself to wonder what it would be like to have her own baby. Her two prior husbands had died, and she couldn't think of anyone she wanted to marry at the moment (she loved Don, but she had no allusions as to his fidelity), and her career had just taken off (such as it was…she was kind of a slacker). But, that didn't mean she was without hope. Perhaps she could adopt? Or have a child with Don (and just not tell him)? And her sister Nina would be around to help take care of a baby. So many things to take into account! She'd have to talk to Nina to get her viewpoint as soon as possible.

The guests departed shortly after dinner thanking Art and Andi for a good time. But Kara barely noticed. She was so tired and had a hard time keeping her eyes open. Andi took her upstairs and read while Kara got ready for bed. But, before Kara could change into her pj's she just had to have a final little bit of fun. Andi rolled her eyes and let Kara jump on her bed for awhile but finally said, "Okay, honey, it's time."
Kara bounced off the bed and changed into her pajamas. She was asleep almost before her head hit the pillow. Andi put away the book she'd been reading and, with a final look at her daughter, turned out the bedroom light on her way out.

Meanwhile, Art had cleaned the kitchen and taken out a birthday cake that he had made in the afternoon. It was time for a little private birthday party for Kim. He wished Kara hadn't been too tired, but he didn't want to ruin her sleep. She needed to be well rested for school. He lit the candles and picked Kim up.
Kim was so excited! She wasn't sure what was happening, but she felt a big change coming on.

Art helped Kim blow out the candles and Andi couldn't contain her happiness. Her little girl was growing up! How time flew!

One instant a toddler…

…and the next a school-aged child. Andi blinked back the tears that burned her eyes. She was so proud of Kim.

While Andi tucked Kim into her new "big girl's" bed, Art sat down to watch the news before turning in for the night. When Andi came back downstairs she found Art asleep in his chair. She giggled to herself and then shook him awake. "Come to bed, honey."
