Kim's Big Day, Part I
October 13th, 2004

Ding, dong…morning! Well, not really. It was still the middle of the night when Kim woke up. She was fully rested but everyone else had gone to bed only a few hours ago.

But she didn't care. She wanted to get up and have some fun! And it was a little lonely in the dark room all by herself. Her sister Kara was right next door but didn't even hear Kim's pitiful wails. Even though she was downstairs, her mom Andi, probably through some sort of motherly instinct, woke up and went to let Kim out of her crib. Today was going to be a big day for Kim!

To keep Kim out of trouble while she took a bath, Andi set Kim by her xylophone. The chiming sounds that emitted from the toy were a little flat, but Kim didn't care. She thought she was making beautiful music.

Having finished her bath, Andi came back into the room to check on Kim. Kim was still having fun making music, but as soon as she saw her mother another idea popped into her mind. She couldn't talk yet, but through much pointing at the bookshelf she got her desires across to her mom. Andi pulled A Pocket for Corduroy from the shelf and sat down on the carpet to read the story.

Andi finished the story and then took Kim downstairs for her baby food. After Kim ate, Andi took her back upstairs and put her daughter down for an early morning nap. As Kim settled down, Andi looked out of the window behind the crib and realized it was finally morning. Ugh! Had she really been up for half the night? Her tummy gurgled. She'd ignored it until now, but she needed to get some thing to eat. She headed back downstairs and saw Art making some breakfast. "Good morning, darlin'. Are you hungry?" he said. Indeed she was!

Andi was just finishing her breakfast as Kara soon came down to eat some cereal. Today was Kara's first day of school in a new town and she was a bit nervous. Andi told her she'd do fine and then went to practice a little chess. Art tried to distract Kara from her worries by showing her a newspaper article about a little boy her own age. Apparently, he'd submitted the winning entry in the "Rename the Town" contest.
Kara looked at the picture of the boy that accompanied the article—he was dressed in a pirate's outfit. "He kinda looks like a dork, Dad," she said.
Art laughed. "Maybe you'll meet him at school though."
Just then the bus pulled up before the house. Kara's brown eyes practically bulged from her head and Art could see them start to shimmer with tears. He hugged her and said, "It'll be all right, hon. And you'll be back home before you know it. Go make me proud of you."

The bus continued to honk and Kara rushed out of the house with a hasty "Goodbye!" thrown over her shoulder. She was nervous but she didn't want to miss the bus on her first day.

It was time to get ready for the day so Art went to take a shower. Andi came in to use the bathroom really quick. But when she flushed, Art got a rude surprise—the water was suddenly scalding! Art hopped out as quickly as he could. "Yeowch! How many times do I have to tell you? Don't flush until after I'm done with my shower!"
A small smile tugged at Andi's lips and she winked at him.

While Art was scouring the internet for a job in the culinary field, Kim woke up from her nap. Andi went up to get her and realized Kim was starting to smell just a tiny bit ripe. So, into the tub she went. Good thing Kim enjoyed bathing!

Andi handed Kim off to Art and was just getting something to eat when she noticed some visitors coming up the walk. Realizing she wouldn't have time to make up a proper lunch, she pulled some instant meals (a.k.a. meal-in-a-can) out of the 'fridge then went to go greet her guests. Andi had met Nina and Dina before, but Daniel was someone new to her. He was quite the charmer.
She invited her guests to come in and make themselves at home but explained that she was going to take a short nap. She had gotten up too early to take care of Kim. Dina told her not to worry, they could entertain themselves.

Art was busy teaching Kim to talk. He was starting to lose hope that she would ever get it, but suddenly, something must have clicked in Kim's head. She could talk! Hoorah, Kim! Art was a little sad that Andi missed it.

Andi was still a little tired after her nap so she decided to take a quick shower to wake herself up. She had just entered the bathroom when Daniel pushed her out of the way. He doubled over the toilet and violently harked up the instant meal he'd just drank. She didn't find him so charming anymore, in fact…

…Andi was horrified and disgusted. "Ugh! Are you okay?"
Daniel just clutched his tummy and groaned. "I'm sorry, I have a bout of food poisoning." He explained that he had eaten some rotten food when he was visiting Nina and Dina a couple of days ago. He moaned again and left the bathroom.
"Next time, stay home if you're sick," Andi muttered under her breath as she started to clean the toilet and struggled not to vomit.
