The Monster and the Maiden: Ch. 01, Part I
January 14th, 2008

Edmond shrugged. "So we have been taught—mere fiction, non—but I am not sure about that anymore." He jabbed Rafe's chest with his finger. "Do you know that I have to drink blood, Rafe? Human blood! Well, humanoid blood anyway—elf blood is just as sweet. But animal blood does not work—I have tried it, thinking it would be easier to obtain, but the taste of it is like rotten meat." A taste he would have been willing to suffer through if it meant he would not have to feed off humanoids, but his body reacted as if he had been poisoned and rejected the animal blood…violently. Vomiting pints of the bright-red, foul-smelling fluid onto the floor of his kitchen while his stomach twisted in excruciating cramps was not anything he cared to experience again.

A quick look of disgust flashed across Rafe's face before he was able to school his features into an expressionless mask.

Edmond's heart stuttered at Rafe's hastily concealed look. He had left Paris so that he would not have to see his friends turn from him in disgust or pity or fear when they realized the full extent of the change the curse had forced upon him. At the time, it had seemed best to him that he find a place where he could live in isolation while he searched for a cure to his condition. A place where he could live without being spurned by the people he loved the most. But, with Rafe now standing here before him, he realized he had missed his friends terribly. It would kill a part of him, part of his human self that still existed, to have a friend hate or fear him.
With a deep breath, he squared his shoulders and prepared himself to reveal to Rafe the truth of his new existence. Either Rafe accepted him as he was or…well, the 'or' did not matter. He had lived without friends for over a year. He had mentally prepared himself to be without friends the rest of his unnatural life, however long that might be.

"Do you remember how you always had to pry me away from my books when you wanted to go to the pubs on the weekends?"
His face still a composed mask, Rafe merely nodded.
"Well, they are now one of my favorite destinations. Every few weeks, I troll the downtown clubs for a lonely male or female. The hardest part is luring them out of the club. But once I get him or her onto the street, it is easy to pull them into a nearby dark alley.
"They seem to figure out what is going on pretty quickly. And some are more than willing to offer themselves to me—the romance of a vampire, oui? But some are terrified and try to run." Edmond paused and tried to stop the delicious shiver that ran through him at the thought of his prey running. "I like those the best. The beast in me requires the hunt just as much as it requires the blood. I think it would enjoy the kill even more, but so far I have been able to resist that temptation.
From there it is simple: a charm to cloud their memory of me, and predator and prey part ways."

Rafe, his battle-hardened friend, stared at him with wide eyes. He drew breath as if he were about to say something but then very deliberately closed his mouth.

Edmond sighed as a weighted silence stretched between them, and Rafe turned toward the window.

The house is Things That Crawl at Night (The Coffin) by Oph3lia at Garden of Shadows with a little redecorating by me.
Edmond le Strange is basically Viktor Gray, a Sim by HIM666 at Garden of Shadows.
Author's Note: Well, I guess you could consider this an experiment. I'm trying out a new way of posting (i.e. breaking up chapters into smaller parts) so that I will be able keep a weekly updating schedule. Also, I've been feeling rather overwhelmed by the epicness of Worlds Apart so, when I got inspired by the sim who has since become Edmond I decided to write his story. I've already written six chapters, which is about three months of updates. So, let's see how it goes. *crosses fingers*

*sigh* Nothing quite like laying tired eyes on gorgeous male Sims before running off to work. Both are quite lovely, but I think Rafe caught my attention the most aggressively. XP I like this story. It's peaked my interest and I look forward to more, more, more!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

You have the hottest sims, Kara.

Gahhh…why are all your Sims so hot? Why?! I have spent about 20 minutes just oggling at my screen when I really need to vacuum my room. *sigh* Oh, and now I can't decide who I like better. Rafe or Edmond, Rafe or Edmond…they're both so amazing, in different ways. (Not quite as good as Alec, but still awesome!) 😉
Oooh…I'm intrigued! I feel a little sorry for Edmond, but he doesn't seem to exactly regret what has happened to him. He'd better not turn out evil, I generally end up liking the characters who would slit my throat if I just offered a friendly, "Hello!"
I shall definitely tune in for the next part!
Oh, and because I rudely forgot to say it before (I think): Happy New Year to you and all your Sims and BJDs! 😀

Ooooh, goodies! This story's already got me gripped as much as Worlds Apart 🙂 Can't wait to find out more about Edmond's curse – and more about him and Rafe of course. I'm also very intrigued re: the maiden and how she fits in …. Great start Kara! And Happy New Year 🙂
P.S. I've got a few of HIM666's guys floating around in my game 😉

That is really wonderful writing as usual, Kara!
I am glad that you are going with smaller chapters to relieve the pressure of updating. I would be thrilled to have some Worlds Apart once per week!

It will be quite fantastic to see more updates from you, be they small bites or big ones, whatever keeps you excited about writing and posting these.
I certainly get the feeling that Edmond's inner turmoil comes from the guilt of not finding his condition to be such a bad thing rather than some inner struggle of having become a “beastâ€.

Man, rafe is one sexy man. I don't know what's more sexy about him…the scar or the hair. There's just something about that "battle-hardened" look that just gets me everytime!

Another intriguing story full of mystery- I love it. I think my favorite part was when you described why Edmond has to drink human blood. Will there be pictures with visuals of gore such as that? I hope so! I'd love to see something that dark used with Sims. 😀

Yikes, I have Worlds Apart bookmarked, I started reading it a while back but then got caught up in a few other things. Will need to continue to read that.
This is a fantastic start. I really love the setting and the caps that go along with the story. Very expressive.
Edmond is truly fighting a demon within himself.

Gorgeous, of course! I particularly liked seeing the Rossetti paintings — one of the most sensual painters, perfect for the setting.
Fascinating, and so great to see someone new like Edmond, with his charming "clutter" thing (I can relate) and Rafe — anyone with that name has a soft spot in my heart!
Wonderful!
