Spotlight on Ransom Clavell

July 17th, 2009

Oh, Ransom Clavell. *fans self* This is the first time that I think I've actually gotten a little crush on one of the pre-made Sims characters. Granted, once I managed to make him part of Katriss' family, I had to tweak his facial features a wee bit with "editsim" (i.e. made his nose smaller, slimmed his head, shrunk his eyes down from anime-proportions, etc.). He was like a diamond in the rough; I just polished him up a bit. 😉 I even went the extra step of saving a copy of him in the Sim Bin so that I can make another character if anything ever happens to this version. Yay!

Anyway, now I want to play show-and-tell with the newly remodeled Ransom. So, please humor me as I gush on about this guy.

I also changed the color of his hair from plain, boring reddish-brown to purple-highlighted darkest chocolate and fixed his horrible facial stubble that looked painted on.

Revamping his wardrobe was imperative as well. (Left to right: everyday/casual, formal, pajamas, work out, swimming suit) He looks a quite squashed and short in these pictures because of the way the CAS camera warps the sims at some angles. But at least you get the basic idea of what his clothes look like.

I must say that I'm a little tempted to change him from his signature mohawk too. I really think this emo cut looks good with the hair color I gave him.

The hair color also makes me like this hairstyle. The bright purple works especially well with it, I think. But for now, I'll stick with the 'hawk. It gives him a distinctive look and looks especially cool when he's a ghost.

Ransom: "What the hell? I'm not see-through any more. And what are these bloody tinkerbell lights hoverin' around me?"

I did another experiment where Katriss once again fed him Ambrosia so he would become a human. I wanted to make sure his good looks would carry over into the the game. I also wanted to see if I needed to tweak his facial stubble a little more (I found out that you have to make it almost invisible in CAS so that it doesn't look painted on in the game. The last few pictures show the stubble that I finally settled on).

Ransom: "Holy crap! I'm alive. Why do I get the feeling that this has happened before?"

Katriss: "Déjà vu, sweetie. Get used to it. It seems to happen a lot around here."

Just a picture. But I like how masculine he looks. Maybe his eyes need to be a little smaller? Or maybe I'm being hyper-critical now.

Now that's a punk sneer if I ever saw one.

As much as I love my little human punk, I haven't actually saved a game in which he is a human yet. I'm sure I'll get sick of the ghost soon, but I might as well enjoy him in that form while I can. It's much easier to make him human than to make him a playable ghost again.

Oh, and I did a wee bit of research on Ransom Clavell (because I'm obsessed. Research courtesy of The Sims Wiki). Apparently, he was married before to a Jennie Clavell and he had a son named Buster. He died in a drowning accident (or was it?) and was buried at Pleasant Rest Graveyard. At the start of Sims 3, his son, Buster, is a Flight Officer in the military and is well into his Golden (elder) Years. He also has a son, Xander, and a wife, Bessie. Xander is a young adult and a party animal who still lives at home although Buster would like nothing more than to kick his ass to the curb. Bessie is an elder like her husband. She is the mediator in the family trying to keep the peace between her husband and her son. And to make things even more interesting, Xander is a long time friend of Katriss' and used to be her boss though now, since she's the Emporer of Evil, she is his boss. haha Anyway, I wonder what would happen if ol' Grandpa Ransom showed up at the Clavell's door?

And, if you're curious, here's the Clavell family tree.

I was going to offer my version of Ransom for download but wasn't sure if anyone would actually be interested. Let me know if you are, and I'll share him with you.

Wow, it's been a while since I last commented.

I love your made-over Ransom. If you were to put him for download, I'd definitely snag him! He's gorgeous, and I have to agree that the purple-black hair looks great on him. I was tempted to make over most of the Maxis sims, they had some really odd looks going. But I like The Sims 3 more than I expected to; there was so much negative hype that it made me appreciate all the really cool features. I especially love the seamless neighbourhoods, and the design tool for clothes is so much more useful than Sims 2-style custom content.

I was interested to read about your Sims – they're all really nice-looking – and I love the ghost-family set-up. Very interesting reading! I wonder what Katriss has planned? 😀

Out of all the Sims 3 sims I have seen Ransom is without a doubt one of the best looking! Almost more than Ethyn (sorry Ethyn). I swear he has dimples doesn't he? Is that tattoo skin in the game or is that custom?

I don't have Sims 3 but if I did I would snag him in a heartbeat…loved the background on his family as well.

Amanlinaball: It's great to hear from you, chica! 😀

Thank you! I'll make Ransom available for upload soon. I've done make overs for a couple of other sims that turned out really well–Gwendolyn, the maid, Thornton Wolff, and Christopher Steel–and I think I'll offer them for download too. You'll see pictures of them in some upcoming posts. I've also updated Ethyn and Katriss a bit. They look better now, I think.

I totally agree with you too. I adore the seamless neighborhood. It's fun to have your sims go downtown or hike around now.

Gayl: Thank you! He does have dimples, I think. Ransom is an adult sim (whereas, for example, Ethyn is a young adult) so he has slight "wrinkles" to make him appear older. They definitely make him appear more mature (in fact, I think he looks better as an adult than he does as a "baby-face" young adult). Anyway, it makes it look like he has dimples, which I find adorable!

The tattoo is an accessory that you can add to the skin. It is even recolorable with the "create-a-style" tool, which is cool. I got it from robokitty.

Hey Cara – I love this little impromptu story you put together. This story, plus some of the mods I saw on MTS, is one of the reasons I finally decided that I'm going to buy Sims 3. Before now, I said I'd never get it but it looks pretty cool for the most part. Especially the view that Katriss has out of her kitchen window!

  5. Stephanie says:

    Oh my f-cken gawd! 😯
Ransom is aych oh tee H-O-T! Waaaay better looking than he used to be, but he's still good loooking as a ghost as well too. 😛 Damn. You weren't kidding when you said you updated his look, big difference 😀 .
Sorry if I seem a little screamy right now, it's just that I finished a game and the ending was rather emotional cry (Shadow Of The Colossus). Aaaaanyway, yeah, if only I had the game. Let's just hope that if I do, I can be maybe HALF as good as you are at making sims <:I. And not make it look like I just puked play doh on some poor guy's face.
Well…. thanks for sharing, he's freakin GORGEOUS! XO

  6. Kara says:

Trina: Thank you so much! I'm glad you're enjoying my silly little story. I've been having fun playing it in the game. Also, I hope you have fun with the Sims 3. The scenery really is awesome.

Stephanie haha! Thanks! I've slightly altered him again as I can't seem to stop messing around with "editsim". But, he still looks pretty much the same. I'll take new pictures of him when I put him up for download.

  7. Trina says:

Kara have you tried the mod that expands the sliders so you can make your sim slimmer or wider?

  8. Kara says:

Trina: Yes, I use Awesomemod and it has a CAS slider scale option. I have it set to "2" or "3". Anyway, it's very helpful. I couldn't edit a sim without it.

  9. Ju says:

;D Ha ha -drools over Ransom-. Wow, he is gorgeous! And he even has a really cool name too. I seriously love The Sims 3. I wish it was easier for me to deal with custom content and mods, but I still love it. It is quite laggy on my computer though, since my computer is a whole whopping seven years old.

I am hoping for a new laptop though HOPEFULLY within a month or two. Then maybe I will have better gameplay. I envy your computer, by the way. ]; Duude.

Oh, and yes, I do still tend to agree that hands aside The Sims 2 sims are much more attractive. Especially the freaking creepy kidlets. :o) Those toddlers are fiercely icky. Like they were beaten with an ugly stick or something. HARD.

  10. Ju says:

❗ Oh, I forgot. Sorry it has been so long since I have commented… my poor family has been through hell for these past nine months.

  11. Kara says:

Ju: I'm sorry to hear that you've been going through rough patch these past several months. I hope things are going smoother for you now.

And, thank you! I'm glad you like Ransom. I've got to get him ready for download. And good luck on getting a new computer soon. Sims 3 is really tough on older computers.

  12. Lani says:

    he looks very british 😀

  13. Kara says:

Lani: That's funny that you say that, as I think of him as British Punk. His voice in my head has an accent. 😕

  14. MizzJizz says:

LMBO!!! I know I am very very late…but I would love a copy of Ransom for my game. He would be the perfect antidote to a SelfSim of a friend I made.

BTW…where did you get the ink from? I have beenn shopping around for some decent ink for my Simmies and keep coming up empty!
